TPLF Accuses Federal Government of Violating Pretoria Agreement
— The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused the federal government of taking military actions that contravene the Pretoria Agreement, warning that such measures risk reigniting conflict in the region.
In a statement issued on February 9, 2026, the TPLF alleged that federal forces had “opened fire on military units and civilians” in recent days, describing the incidents as part of an effort to push Tigray into renewed hostilities. The party emphasized that it remains committed to resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful political means.
The statement further stated that federal authorities continue to control 40 percent of territory constitutionally belonging to Tigray, while large numbers of displaced people remain in camps under dire humanitarian conditions.
The TPLF reiterated its calls for the establishment of an African Union–led team of experts to assess the status and progress of the peace agreement, stressing that its requests for full implementation have received little response. “The Ethiopian government is now trying to drag Tigray into another round of bloody war,” the statement read. However, the organization insisted it has “no desire” to return to armed conflict and instead urged negotiations within the framework of the Pretoria Agreement.
The TPLF also criticized what it described as insufficient efforts by the international community, while welcoming recent warnings from the United Nations, the African Union, and the United States as a positive step toward accountability.
